GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATIONANDCLIMATE
Crimeanpeninsula is located at the south
of Ukraine. It iswashedby theBlack andAzov
Seas connectedwithKerch strait. Areaof Crimea
equals 26.1 thousand square kilometers.
At thenorth, thepeninsulaborders Kherson
andZaporizhya regions of Ukraine and at
theeastwithKrasnodarsky regionof Russian
Federation. Stateborder length inCrimea
equals 821 km, including seaborder –292
km. Sympheropol is theCapital Cityof the
Autonomous Republicof Crimea.
Oneof Crimean assets is itsmild climate that
is close toMediterranean. Numerous days of
sunshine, warm sea, humid air, uniquemineral
springs, all this attracts tourists fromdifferent
countries of theworld. They sayCrimean climate
is close toCyprus climate.
Crimean peninsula has diverse landscapes:
at the north, there are plains, while at the
south there are CrimeanMountains covered
withwoods. Most of the resorts are located in
coastal areas.
Population of Crimea is almost 2million
people. The Autonomous Republic includes
14 districts.
HISTORYOFCRIMEA
In the7th-6thcenturiesB.C., Greekcities-
statesKhersones (located in themodern siteof
Sevastopol), FeodossiaandPantikapey-Bospor
(modernKerch)werebuilt.Theywere involved
actively in foreign trade. Bospor kingdomwas
theonly large slave-owning state in thewhole
Northernpartof BlackSea region.
Later on, Scythian statewas established in
Crimea. It existeduntil the3rdcenturyB.C. Then it
was concurredanddestroyedbyGoths. Later on,
newwaveof conquerors came to thepeninsula.
Their descendants –Karaites – still live inCrimea.
Slavonic tribesbegan theirparticipation in the
historyof thepeninsulasince the9thcentury. In
988-989, KyivPrinceVladimirconqueredKherson
(Korsun).Afterwards, thepeninsulawasdominated
atdifferent timesbyPolovtsyandGoldenHorde.
Crimeaalso remembersGenoeseandVenetians.
Early in the15thcentury,CrimeanKhanatewas
established.After thewarbetweenRussiaandTurkey
(1768-1774) itwasannexed toRussianEmpire.
In1918, thepeninsulawasdeclaredCrimean
AutonomousSoviet SocialistRepublic inRussian
Federation. Since1954, CrimeawasUkraine’s
domain. Ukrainebecame independent in1991.
