n June 5-7, 2006, the
fourth joint session of the
Intergovernmental Ukrainian-
Syrian Commission on Trade,
Economic and Technical
Cooperation (hereinafter
referred to as Commission) was conducted
inDamascus. The priority issues of the
cooperation between the two countries were
discussed in the framework of themeeting:
import and export operations, cooperation
in the sphere of business tourism, import of
steel fromUkraine, export of textile toUkraine,
construction and constructionmaterials,
consulting.
The joint session has been initiated by the
Chairman of Ukraine-Syria Business Council
Sergei Pachkovsky. The Syrian delegationwas
headed by theMinister of Finance of Syrian
Arabian Republic Dr. MuhammedHusein, the
Ukrainian delegation – by the first vice Prime
Minister Stanislav Stashevsky. The latter has
met the PrimeMinister of Syria Naji Ottri, vice
PrimeMinister Abdulla Dardari, Minister of
Foreign Affaires ValidMuallim.
The Ukrainian-Syrian commission took a
decision to elaborate a number of bilateral
agreements on the cooperation in the
trade, economic, customs and banking
spheres, in the industry, power engineering,
transportation, telecommunications and latest
technologies. The parties have agreed upon
the cooperation in oil and gas sector, in the
spheres of mineral resources, agricultural
production, culture, tourism and healthcare.
After the joint session, a number of documents
were signed: the agreement on cultural
cooperation between the governments of
Ukraine and Syria, the program of scientific
and technical cooperation on agricultural
science for 2006-2010 and also the program
on implementing the agreement between
the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine and the
Government of Syrian Arabian Republic in
